Euthyphro dilemma. The dilemma is this: is an action pious because it is loved by the gods, or is it loved by the gods because it is pious? If the former, then a good or pious action is whatever the gods want, perhaps including actions we might ordinarily think of as decidedly bad. If the latter, then a good or pious action can be defined without reference to the gods at all.
